5 Easy Steps to Discover Your Life Purpose and Its Benefits

Introduction

In the hustle and bustle of daily life, it’s easy to lose sight of what truly matters. Many of us find ourselves asking, “What is my purpose?” This question is not just philosophical; it’s a fundamental aspect of our well-being and happiness. Understanding your life purpose can provide direction, motivation, and a sense of fulfillment. There’s tons of distractions around us constantly, leaving you feeling exhausted and hopeless. Focusing on your life purpose and living it, brings hope, excitement, and joy back.

What is Life Purpose?

Life purpose is the reason you get up in the morning. It can guide life decisions, influence behavior, shape goals, offer a sense of direction, and create means. A life purpose comes in many forms; healer, teacher, creator, warrior, and protector are a few that comes to mind. Careers, jobs, and hobbies fall into one or more of these categories.

I’ve been a hairstylist for 30+ years, but my life purpose is teaching. It’s not that I want to be a teacher in a classroom setting, but I love teaching what I’ve learned and what excites me. I share that information with my clients. My students (clients) are trapped in my chair, ha. One of my favorite decades in my career was working for Joico as an educator. Not to mention I still get calls from stylists for color questions. As I continue to grow and expand my business Wellness Garden Tool Shed, teaching and providing tools for the betterment of people is our mission and my life purpose.

Examining the categories reveals the interconnectedness of roles. A teacher must also be a student, continuously learning. A warrior may have firsthand experience as a victim or witness. A creator possesses a desire for something that does not yet exist. The healer’s past includes experiences of receiving or lacking nurture. There is often overlap among these roles. For instance, helping a victimized individual can be seen as both warrior-like action and falls under the healer’s domain. In such cases, it often involves researching and acquiring knowledge to provide solutions. Additionally, it aligns with the healer’s role by teaching others how to prevent victimization, whenever feasible.

The Importance of Life Purpose

Having a clear life purpose is linked to numerous benefits. Research shows that individuals with a strong sense of purpose tend to live longer, healthier lives. They experience lower risks of diseases, better mental health, and greater overall well-being2. A sense of purpose can also lead to increased resilience, helping you navigate life’s challenges with greater ease.

What stands out to me as the most important regarding a life purpose is that it coincides with the notion that there’s something more to being on this planet and knowing our connection to everything. It gives a reason for our existence. When we are feeling rejected, our purpose reminds us that we can’t be rejected because our purpose matters, therefor, we matter. Depression can occur when we are focused on our mental stuff or what’s going wrong in our world. But if we remember our purpose, it turns our focus to being of service to others. Thus, making us feel better.

(Disclaimer: This does not include all types of depression. If you are experiencing any sort of depression, seek medical help. I am not a doctor.)

We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.

Winston Churchill

Life purpose is what you can provide and offer to others, while it may be beneficial to you but, ultimately it is the intention and energy of helping or providing something for others. Knowing that the Universe is a mirror to your beliefs about yourself, you can’t help feel good when you see how your life purpose is enjoyed and received by others.

How to Discover Your Life Purpose

Finding your life purpose is a journey that involves self-reflection, exploration, and sometimes, trial and error. Here are some steps to help you uncover your purpose:

  1. Reflect on Your Passions and Interests: What activities make you lose track of time? What topics do you love to learn about? Your passions can provide clues to your life purpose.
  2. Consider Your Strengths and Talents: What are you naturally good at? How can you use your skills to contribute to the world?

  5. Listen to Feedback: Pay attention to what others say about your strengths and contributions. Sometimes, others can see our purpose more clearly than we can.

Living a Purpose-Driven Life

Once you have a sense of your life purpose, it’s important to align your actions with it. In many cases you may discover that you have incorporated your purpose without realizing it.
